Cortona on the Move is an international photography exhibition that the city of Cortona hosts throughout the summer, in various exhibition locations around the center, read the post and visit the exhibition before it ends.

If you've never been to Cortona summer could be the right time. The international photographic exhibition was inaugurated in the city on the hill on 13 July Cortona on the Move.

Already seven editions of an exhibition that is growing in importance, with internationally renowned photographers and very special locations, which allow you to visit the length and breadth of the Etruscan city, discovering both the places of classical tourist interest and exhibition spaces created in environments used for purposes completely different: this only adds to the charm!

Cortona on the Move is in fact located in 9 points, where you can see the shots (or videos) of a single author or several authors. If the biggest names are at the spectacular Fortezza del Girifalco, other exhibition venues have awakened strong emotions in me.

But it's a matter of taste, and so I don't want to impose mine on you. The photos convey a vision of the world, our world with many topical issues: wars, the issue of migrants to Italy, impoverished families; but also the condition of women, the changes produced by tourism in the city of Cortona, minorities that try to keep their identity alive, environmental catastrophes. The authors are famous: Donna Ferrato, Pete Souza, Matt Black, Adam Ferguson, Sandra Mehl, Silvia Amodio and other. There are 21 exhibitions in all, a nice tour de force to be done in a single day. The level of the festival is very high and the selected authors come from all over the world.

An applause to the curators for the choice of locations, always different and able to add emotion to those already transmitted by the photos: Peter Souza, who has followed the life of President Obama day after day, is hosted in the halls of the MAEC, the most important Cortona museum. Justyna Mielnikiewicz, who narrates the suffering of Ukraine, occupies an entire floor of the former hospital in Cortona, amidst white tiles and graffiti painted on the walls of an abandoned place. Adam Ferguson, who portrayed the faces of Afghans with incredible intensity, is located in the former Meat Warehouse, a large cellar with crumbling walls and a slightly disturbing air.

The exhibition makes it possible to visit all the locations with the ticket (valid for all exhibitions) which costs 15 euros; only to access the MAEC it is necessary to add the small sum of € 2 which however allows a visit to the entire museum. This, mainly dedicated to Etruscan civilization, houses an incredible work of chiselling and sculpture, the Etruscan chandelier.

This zigzag movement between the narrow streets of the center and the most important squares is really appreciated: Piazza della Repubblica with the Palazzo del Comune, Piazza Signorelli with the homonymous theater and the building that houses the MAEC, Piazza del Duomo. Fascinating and panoramic, in an elevated position as befits a place of defense, here is the Fortress of Girifalco.
The streets of Cortona are full of cafes, restaurants and shops; there is really no shortage of tourists, you can hear the most varied languages spoken. The shop windows and balconies bear the signs with the festival logo, you get the feeling that everyone is involved in this initiative.

In short, if you decide to come for the exhibition, you have until 1 October. The hashtag of the event is # cotm2017.

Cortona is a city of Etruscan origin and stands on a hill overlooking the Val di Chiana and Lake Trasimeno. It can be reached with the A1 at the Valdichiana exit and then continuing for about 20 km. Otherwise you can get to the station of Camucia and then go up to Cortona by bus.
There are also other interesting places to see, such as the Church of Santa Maria del Calcinaio a Renaissance church designed by Francesco di Giorgio Marini. Or, outside the town, the Eremo delle Celle, a Franciscan place par excellence where you can breathe a serenity out of time in an intact environment.
