Ponza: getting around the island by boat

If you are looking for a relaxing and not very touristy sailing holiday, this is the post for you. Discovering Ponza by boat!

A holiday in Ponza it is definitely the most recommended to relax and let go of stress. And you know this.
Well, it's not just you who know. And in the summer months Ponza could be a bit cramped to accommodate everyone. Yet there is a solution, and it is within everyone's reach, even the most inexperienced: rent a boat or dinghy to be able to feel free to travel around the island and reach places where you would never arrive by land.

How to rent a boat in Ponza

You can then rent a small boat through one of the dealers near the port and be able to guarantee yourself a beautiful relaxing day.
Proceed sailing west, then heading right, to circumnavigate the island and find yourself on the opposite side. On the way you will meet the Faraglioni of the Madonna towards the Roman Port and the Parata, then Punta della Guardia. At your discretion you may decide to stop and rest in one of these places.

Chiaia di Luna and Lucia Rosa

From here you will find yourself almost on the other side - climbing over to the west side - and you will then arrive at Chiaia di Luna, the most spectacular cove of the island, from which it is possible to witness a wonderful sunset that is definitely a postcard.

Continuing the navigation, two rocks protruding towards the sea are the sign that you are almost at Lucia Rosa, not particularly renowned for its beauty but certainly the most comfortable as it is sheltered from the wind and not too sunny because, I assure you, after a day at sea the shade will be the most coveted thing.
Here you can moor near the rocks to find a fixed point where to rest or anchor the boat and swim towards the small beach of the cove.

Where to eat in Ponza

Continuing the tour we arrive therefore at Cala Feola where there is a second port, much smaller.
Here you can dock and go to La Marina, a small restaurant difficult to reach by land that offers the dish of the day fresh fish caught by the owner's children the previous night.

With a full belly, here we are at natural pools and after these you will finally arrive at the turning point: you can decide to continue passing through a passage between Gavi and Punta Incenso in which only small boats can pass and you have to be very careful of the rocks.
An advice? Wait for the arrival of a local goiter, following in its wake will be a sure shot!

From here you will find yourself again towards the side of the port of Ponza, which you can see in the distance. Returning you will come across the Frontone beach, the most touristic on the island; the one in which, if you hadn't rented the boat, you would be too! Take advantage of one last swim before returning to the port.

Ponza in the evening: tips

It is normal for a little westerly wind to pick up in the evening which could lead to the formation of waves and generate fear for the return. There is nothing to worry about. It is perfectly normal and the most important thing is not to get caught up in the anxiety of returning with the risk of ending up in the middle of the waves generated by the largest ships.

Important: for some years it has been forbidden to anchor near the cliffs due to the debris that could fall. It will therefore be easy to find no approach signs.
You will then find yourself in a position to drop anchor where the water is still quite high. Recommended don't forget to bring your mask to be able to dive in if it gets entangled, and thus not find yourself having to cut it and repay your renter, later!
