The New York Marathon is not only one of the most important sporting events in the United States, but the whole planet. The marathon runs over the classic distance of 42,195 km and runs through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world and each edition sees the participation of over 50 thousand athletes from all countries.
The race is organized by the New York Road Runners (NYRR) and has been held every year since 1970, with the exception of 2012, when due to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, it was not held. Along with the Boston and Chicago marathon, it is among the most important annual long-distance running events in the United States and one of the largest in the world.
In the past years, it has been sponsored by the financial group ING. Since 2014, Tata Consultancy Services, a multinational information technology (IT), services, consulting and business solutions firm based in India, has started an eight-year stint as an official sponsor of the event.
The race takes place on the first Sunday of November and attracts professional and amateur competitors from all over the world.
How to participate
Due to the popularity of the event, participation in the event is entrusted by drawing lots to a lottery. Runners who meet the requirements or who are NYRR members or who get nominated through an official club can get guaranteed entry.
