Ex Forno, an excellent brunch near the MAMbo in Bologna

The cafeteria of the beautiful Museum of Modern Art in Bologna is the ideal place to enjoy an excellent Sunday brunch: intimate, original and low cost!

Eat well in a museum restaurant and without leaving a fortune you can! I am not usually attracted to the locals that are at the exit of a tourist place, but here in Bologna, next to the Mambo - the beautiful Museum of Contemporary Art - there is an absolutely recommended place, theFormer Oven.
So if you have decided, like many other visitors - that suddenly they realized that Bologna is also a tourist destination! - to visit the important MAMbo - Museum of Modern Art Bologna, you have the right address for you.

Art and food

When I went to Bologna, on the first Sunday of the month, the Museum was free and this fact is already very appreciated. I was able to admire both the permanent collection of modern art and the section entirely occupied by Morandi Museum, a Bolognese painter who lately crosses my path repeatedly. A splendid monographic that suggests the entire artistic path of this author, only apparently monotonous or repetitive.

In any case, after the visit and having satisfied the thirst for culture, even the stomach was felt and since the MAMbo is located in an area close to the center but not really well known, attention was immediately attracted to this place. The place in question is called Former Oven, which shares its headquarters with the museum spaces (in this building, built at the dawn of the First World War, the Municipality of Bologna started a massive production of bread for the hungry and poor population).

The brunch of the Ex Forno

Did I already write that it was Sunday? And on Sundays in the great room of the Ex Forno (which, due to its appearance, could be the place where bread was made) an inviting brunch is served. I didn't hesitate even for a moment and took a seat: the room is furnished with salvaged pieces, mismatched chairs, tables of various shapes, works of art, design elements: a mix that creates a nice atmosphere. There are also some large tables to sit on if you are alone or in two, perhaps socializing with the neighbor.

What to expect

Along the walls of the room, on long tables, there is food that can be served freely: eggs and toast, but also lasagna, cold cuts, meatballs, cous cous, salads, grilled vegetables, fresh fruit, desserts. To drink: water in a carafe and fruit juices. There is attention in the choice of raw material and with an eye to all types of consumers. After all, it is by no means a place full of tourists: most of the customers were from Bologna, groups of friends and families who had gathered there to eat together.
