I pintxos (spit, or skewers) are one of the major attractions of the city. Whether you love local customs or not, “going for pintxos” is an experience not to be missed.

I Basque country they are one of the best places to eat in the Iberian Peninsula and Donostia is one of the most prestigious representatives of this cuisine in terms of quality and variety. Besides the restaurants, let's not forget the most popular ones tapas bar. In some of these places, presentation and attention to detail are no less than that of the most famous colleagues. Almost all the places I visited are located in the old part of the city. After a long walk along the promenade in front of the Playa de la Concha and, crossing the Kursaal bridge, you will find yourself in front of a tangle of alleys that are home to a great variety of bars and cafeterias offering pinxos for all tastes.

Zeruko Bar

This bar is located in the center, in one of the areas with the greatest nightlife. All the tapas are very elaborate and well made. We advise you to try the “Bonfire” a very famous and succulent smoked cod pintxo.

Borda Berri Bar

This is another traditional bar in the old town. It is located practically around the corner from the Zeruko. We definitely recommend trying one of their rice pintxos: rice with squid pulp or Idiazabal cheese risotto.

La Cuchara de San Telmo

A very small bar, mainly frequented by university students and always very crowded. If you manage to enter and get to the counter (try to arrive as soon as they open) I recommend you try the cannelloni or foie with apple compote.

Taberna Gandarias

Like the Zeruko, it is another traditional bar in the historic center of Donostia. Here you can't miss the sirloin pintxo.

A Fire Nero

This bar is certainly much more "glamorous" than the previous ones .. You will find well prepared and very good pintxos. Slightly more expensive than other places, due to the particular attention in the elaboration of its dishes. From mid-January until April they serve a very good locally produced “sidra”.

Goiz-Argi

This is a small and somewhat uncomfortable family-run bar, but it's worth visiting just to try the famous shrimp skewer.

Paco Bueno

This is very different from other bars. The pintxos are very simple, but always fresh and freshly prepared. It is an old bar, it has nothing glamorous, but it is one of the most visited by people living in San Sebastian. Their squid and scampi are famous.

If you are a tomato lover, you have to start with the Nestor bar. The “de tomate” tapas are the signature of the house. Then, if you are still hungry, don't forget to try the steak. Prepared to "cut" it can be shared among several people, it is certainly one of the best dishes of this place.
