Getting to and around Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, the ancient Ragusa, is certainly one of the main tourist destinations for those who spend their holidays in Croatia, even if the particular geographical position could create some difficulties in the approach. It is in fact located in the southern extremity of Dalmatia, "crushed" on one side by Bosnia-Herzegovina (which among other things interrupts the Croatian coast for a few kilometers) and closed to the south by Montenegro.

Reaching Dubrovnik by car could prove to be at least a demanding undertaking, given that the motorway network does not reach it, that private vehicles cannot enter the city center and that parking lots, for a large part of the city, they are all paid.

Even the railway network does not reach Dubrovnik, which is why extra-urban public transport by land is entrusted to the numerous bus. From here, in fact, there are buses to various locations, including Zadar, Rijeka, Sarajevo, Split and Zagreb. The main bus station is located at the entrance to the old town.

The best way to reach the city, especially from the center-south, is to rely on transport by sea with ferries of the Croatian company Jadrolinija, with frequent connections from Bari. Prices range from 40 to 99 € in low season (until 20 June and from 1 September) and from 48 to 119 € in high season; on weekends it goes from 55 to 136 €. Prices per person plus 15 € for port taxes, security and fuel surcharge. Travel time in 8-10 hours.

Another way to visit Dubrovnik from the sea is to join one cruise that includes Venice. In fact, most of them also include a stop in the Croatian city.

Another possibility is to reach Dubrovnik by air. Low cost flights to and from Croatia are not yet so popular. However, among the Croatian cities, Dubrovnik is one of the best served. The drawback is linked to the fact that the airport is located about 20 km from the city and to reach it in a low cost way by bus it is almost always necessary to change near the city of Cavat, a few km outside Dubrovnik. There are also direct shuttle services, certainly more expensive (and impossible to book online), and connections in taxi about 30 €.
