Umag: sea, relaxation and good food in Istria

Just 40km from Trieste, Umag is located in Istria, Croatia. Here is what to do and where to sleep, which beaches to visit and where to find excursions to do in Umag, read the post.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Croatia is that, for us who live in Italy, it only takes a few kilometers to discover a different reality, with a language so distant from ours and a different currency (which very often allows us to have a wonderful but really low cost holiday).

The village of Umag, on the other side of the gulf of Trieste, is the door that leads us to Croatia coming from northern Italy by car, the way I recommend. Away 40km from Trieste: once you have crossed the border, just follow the directions Ljubljana-Capodistria, thus entering the Umag-Novigrad region, and you are in the northernmost corner of Istria, a welcoming and hospitable territory, which shows the most authentic face of the Mediterranean landscape of the past, with most of the family-run tourist activities .

Like many Croatian towns, Umag has preserved its medieval aspect, a historic center made of alleys and narrow streets, the characteristic stone houses and the central square with the large church, today surrounded by bars and restaurants that light up with small ones in the evening. romantic lights.

Umag therefore presents itself as the perfect village where to spend a quiet but quality holiday!

Where to stay in Umag

Umag offers different structures suitable for every need: come on campgrounds which are located at the entrance of the town, along the main road, like lo Stella Maris, within the resort of the same name, or the Camping Zak, which boasts a beautiful (and rare in these parts) sandy beach.
Of course, those who want tranquility and relaxation can choose a structure of family hotels and small family-run hotels such as Villa Valdepian or Villa Rosetta. Finally, luxury is not lacking with the 5 stars of the Melia Coral or the Kempinski Hotel Adriatic. However, in my opinion, the most practical way to manage oneself in the locality is accommodation in Studio, or in a studio or small apartment for rent: there are really many in every Croatian town and tend to be at low cost. Therefore, for those who should book list-minute, it is a guarantee, you will always find a free place!

The beaches of Umag

Il Croatian sea it is famously clear and clean and some of its beaches boast the Blue Flag title. to take a break from the sun at lunchtime!
From personal experience I recommend never arriving in Croatia without a couple of rock shoes! Such clean waters have a price to pay: it is the absence of sand that keeps the coast clean and clear, but getting into the water can be difficult! If you are not well equipped, several small shops on the seafront sell shoes for every taste and size at a low price.

Where to eat in Umag

Istria boasts excellent cuisine, of fish of course, but also of meat. The promenade is dotted with numerous bistros and small restaurants with large terraces, you are spoiled for choice.
But I also highly recommend theBuscina farmhouse, just outside the city, returning for a few kilometers to the north on the main access road to the city: it offers exquisite and generous dishes of the typical Istrian meat and fish cuisine with house wine.
I recommend: taste the oil of Umag! Since Roman times it has been worked with traditional methods and is known as one of the best Croatian products in the world!
