Events throughout the year in Times Square

There are many events throughout the year which take place in Times Square, especially on public holidays. If you happen to be on a public holiday, you will most likely find yourself attending some parade or collective event.

The main event in the square takes place on the evening of December 31st. For the New Year more than a million people gather on the square. People wait for the New Year by counting down until midnight, when the sphere on One Times Square is dropped and a myriad of confetti invades the square.


What to see around Times Square

If you have time besides Times Square you can explore Midtown Manhattan, the neighborhood that houses the famous square.


Driving along 7th Avenue in just over 10 minutes you will arrive at Central Park, a beautiful park in the heart of New York. The distance between Times Square and Central Park is 1,1 km. Once in Central Park on the left you can also admire the Columbus Circle and Time Warner Center.


East of Times Square is a park, the Bryant Park. In the summer, it's a great place to relax amongst the skyscrapers, and in the winter, it hosts New York Fashion Week! Next to Bryant Park is the New York Public Library, and a little further east, the Grand Central Station and Chrysler Building.

South of Times Square stands the other famous skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, theEmpire State Building. There are also other shops around Herald Square, such as the renowned store Macy's. Close to Macy's is the Madison Square Garden.

West of Times Square is located Hell's kitchen, also known as Clinton, the trendy neighborhood of Midtown Manhattan. There are some of the great Off-Broadway theaters, small boutiques and a fantastic selection of restaurants and cafes. In the area there is the New York Times Building skyscraper, which with its 319 meters high is the fourth tallest building in the city.


How to get to Times Square

Getting to the square is very easy, especially if you are already in Manhattan. The subway lines that stop at Times Square are: 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q and R. The metro is the cheapest and fastest way, especially during the busiest hours.

You can get there even on foot from many of Manhattan's top attractions, many are just over a mile from the famous square. Times Square is located atintersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue, and between West 42nd Street and West 47th Street.
