Vacation in New York: the neighborhoods for low cost sleep

On holiday in New York, which neighborhood do you choose to sleep well, feel safe and maybe low cost? Here is a list of the best neighborhoods in New York to sleep in.

For a year I lived in an area of Brooklyn, the neighborhood that in every Italian tourist guide is described as one of the worst places to sleep for a tourist. Well, I've shot New York far and wide and a little at all hours of the day and night, returning at the most disparate times. I have never come across gunfights like you see in movies or brawls and burning cars.

Where to sleep low cost

Twenty years ago that was the crack zone, but now these things are no longer seen, or certainly not on the street. The area of Brooklyn where I live is now full of cafes, restaurants and young people who come back by subway in the evening without any problems. Often even when I go home alone I come across police cars that patrol the various areas, even checking the subway. I feel safer here in New York than in Florence at night, the Italian city where I come from.

Same story for the Bronx. It is no longer that of the 80s and 90s and indeed in that neighborhood now there is the largest Little Italy in New York, much larger and more beautiful than the Italian area that is next to China Town and which has become, if we want to be honest, too touristy. Never forget that Times Square the one where now you need sunglasses even at night and where everyone runs to take pictures, years ago it was a red district with night clubs, sex shops, prostitutes and drug dealers making it all inaccessible to ordinary people.

The areas I have described above are both safe. Starting from the assumption that in this city no one will bother you, since the punishments with the law are particularly heavy, the rule is valid in all parts of the world where you are not at home: do not put yourself in equivocal situations and you will always be safe.

Where not to sleep

Areas to live and stay, in my opinion in terms of security, are all fine. Generally they told me to let it go east Harlem only because it is an area of popular housing so maybe it is not the best place to stay on vacation.

Idem Coney Island, which I do not recommend, however, regardless because it is too far away. As beautiful as this area is, all the trains that go there are local only (not express, in New York there is this difference in subways), so before arriving in Manhattan it takes about 50 minutes, which done twice a day waste a lot of time.

Same for the Queens which is fine for its proximity to the airports, but it is too far from the city center. It will take you longer to catch and find the subway than actually visiting the city.
