Travel to Lanzarote: tips for an unforgettable holiday

What to see and what to do in Lanzarote to spend very little and experience a fantastic holiday. How to get there by low cost flight, why take a car and where to sleep low cost, read the post.

It is a unique island, Lanzarote. An island with a taste of lava and wind, with the scent of aloe and ocean. Falling in love with its black rocks, low vineyards and white houses is really easy. If you have a few days available, low budget and love for nature and simplicity, Lanzarote is the destination for you.

Also reachable with Ryanair flight (lasting about 4 hours), the island is small and can be easily visited even in a few days, thanks also to the buses that serve the major centers and the beaches. For greater freedom of movement, on the other hand, car rental is convenient and economical, especially because the gasoline cost is very low.

In Lanzarote the climate is pleasant all year round, the rains almost absent and the constant wind makes the temperatures pleasant. A windbreaker for the evening is therefore always recommended, even in summer! Having said that, my dispassionate advice is to visit the island in the low season months, when tourists are still few and the prices are much lower.

To stay at affordable prices it is advisable to choose i major tourist centers, such as Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen: interesting bargains can be found by booking in advance.  Apartamentos Celeste a Costa Teguise for example it is a welcoming residence, well-kept, clean and colorful, absolutely cheap in the low season. For a real holiday discovering the island, the accommodation will serve you only as a base for the night and perhaps for a few poolside dinners.

Choosing accommodation and means of transport, you can abandon yourself to the beauty of this barren jewel in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, facing the Sahara desert, a black dot constantly lapped by Trade winds, which raise waves so high they fill the north coast of surfers. For a short vacation of about 5 days it is ideal to plan a mix of sea, excursions, museums and good food. Without ever forgetting to leave room for improvisation and, why not, chance!

The itinerary artistic cultural it must undoubtedly foresee the architect's works Cesar Manrique (Jardin de Cactus, Jameos del Agua, Fundaciòn Manrique, Casa Museo Cesar Manrique), the Cueva de los Verde and Casa Josè Saramago (the latter opens only in the morning). There is the possibility of buying a tourist card (bonos) for 3,5 or 6 "Centros de arte, cultura y turismo" with which to save up to € 11 for admissions. Manrique's works can also be admired unconsciously throughout the island: street lamps, baskets, decorations for roundabouts, etc. An all-round artist, profound lover of his land and attentive to the environment and landscape, which he protected with all forces.

If you love trekking arm yourself with hat, boots and water and book a guided excursion in the Timanfaya National Park, a unique and breathtaking place. Instead, the tour on the dromedaries (attraction for unaware tourists) and the bus tour, really sad and out of fashion, are not recommended.

And a nice dip in the cool ocean? Absolutely a must! The island, of volcanic and therefore rocky origin, has only a few stretches of coast accessible by sea and each of them has different characteristics and morphologies; from the windy beach Famara to the north, a place chosen by surfers, to the quietest Punta Mujeres to the East, passing through the beautiful Papagayo Beach and the white coast of Orzola.

Traveling also means being overwhelmed by the traditions of the place and enjoying its products; the island of Lanzarote, despite its barren and dark appearance, is fertile land for vineyards, chickpeas and potatoes, strictly protected from the wind by dry stone walls, the socos. The jareas, pejines or tollos, the "shriveled" potatoes that are eaten with the skin and accompanied with salt and sauces are excellent; very good goat cheeses and fish. All accompanied by fragrant wine preferably from La Geria, the result of low vineyards that color the lava land.

And then ... how can we not recommend the sunset on the beach, the goat cheese from Femes, the mojito from La Palmera in Teguise, the fish in Arreite and the postcards, which will never reach their destination?
