A train to Kazimierz and the Jewish ghetto of Krakow

A train to Kazimierz and the Jewish ghetto of Krakow

A special tourist train that leaves at the corner of Piazza del Mercato, on the road that runs along the side facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria, will take you inside the ghetto of Kazimierz, Jewish quarter of Krakow.

Since Krakow, at the time of the Nazi domination, the seat of the German General Government, the city has been able to keep intact all the testimonies inherent to that black period of human history.

The little train, equipped with audio guide in various languages, including Italian, will first take you through the streets of Kazimierz, where, in the main square, there are excellent restaurants with typical Jewish cuisine (the Szara restaurant is considered the best ever) and there is also the house in Oskar Schindler (protagonist of the film Schindler's List by Steven Spielberg) during his stay in Krakow. The train will then go along the Synagogue, the cemetery and the market area, where, even today, you can eat the best take away food in the city. We will then come to the Square of the chairs or square of the heroes of the ghetto, opposite the old pharmacy. A strange square, very large, in which you can see 70 wooden chairs, each of which is illuminated by a spotlight. It may seem nonsense, but instead they have a meaning to make the soul freeze: they testify to the houses left empty by the Jews when they were deported.

We then come to Schindler's factory, a large building very well preserved, on whose ground floor windows you can see the

In front of the factory the remains of the ghetto walls still survive.

The tour lasts approx 50 minutes, but the effect it arouses in hearts you will always carry with you.
