Washington DC, formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, is the capital of the United States. The city is home to many national monuments and museums, which are mainly found around the National Mall. The city is home to 176 foreign embassies and is home to many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobby groups, and professional associations.

The city of Washington DC is marked by some of the most famous monuments in the world. Museums, sophisticated restaurants, various shops and large shopping centers are scattered throughout the city. The architecture of the city varies greatly. Six of America's 10 most important buildings are in the District of Columbia: the White House; the National Cathedral of Washington; the Thomas Jefferson Memorial; the United States Capitol; the Lincoln Memorial; and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
