Via Francigena: getting to know Tuscany on the way

Il travel on foot it is one of the most authentic and direct ways to get in touch with a place, because it allows you to hear every single noise, perceive its scents and brightest colors. Walking in itself implies a different approach to the sense of travel, slower, more introspective and reflective, but above all more sustainable.

Thus, in a moment in which the great European paths of a religious nature are strongly re-evaluated giving them a tourist significance, even before being spiritual, it becomes more important than ever to take back our local reality, the ancient Via Francigena, certainly less frequented and known than the Santiago's walk, but for this reason no less interesting from the point of view of the landscape and the cultural heritage it can offer. The original itinerary traveled by Sigeric, led from Rome to Canterbury, crossing France, among hilly and mountainous landscapes, plains and rivers.

The Tuscany Region has decided to undertake a careful redevelopment and enhancement project of the route of the Via Francigena, in order to make it accessible to all pilgrims, with appropriate signage, support structures and accommodation available at every stage of the journey.

Starting from Pass of the Cisa and Pontremoli, you cross the entire length of the region, to reach Radicofani, the last stop before the border with Lazio, parading on mule tracks and dirt roads, among cypresses, vineyards, ancient villages and cultivated hills, always accompanied by the incredible variety of colors of Tuscany. Together we will walk some paths in the Pontremoli area and the stretch that goes from Buonconvento to Bagno Vignoni.

A path that winds in total for about 390 kilometers, which can also be covered in small and very small stages; long and certainly tiring in some places, but which allows you to get to know a part of Tuscany that is still little known, unexpected, silent and solitary. The Via Francigena, even before being a religious journey, is a pure, authentic travel experience, which allows you to rediscover a different dimension of the "road ahead".
