    If you want to visit Canada, it is important to be well informed about the documents required for entry into the country. In this guide we will see which are the documents required from the Spaniards to enter Canada both for tourism and business, both for study and work.

    Documents required for entry into Canada

    Spanish citizens do not need a visa to visit Canada, as long as their stay is less than six months and is for tourist or business reasons. Also, you need to be in possession of a passport valid for at least the duration of the stay. However, it is recommended that the expiry date of the document is at least six months beyond the expected departure date.



    If you arrive by plane in Canada it is mandatory be in possession of the eTA (electronic Travel Authorization or electronic authorization) or a visa and passport valid. The eTA is issued by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and is similar to the US ESTA.

    If you come to Canada by land or by sea, for example by car from the United States or arriving by bus, train or ship, including cruise ships, it is not necessary to be in possession of the "electronic Travel Authorization" (eTA), but just a passport valid.

    How to apply for an eTA

    The request for the eTA can be made exclusively Online only. To request "electronic Travel Authorization" you need to:



    • have a valid Spanish passport or passport issued by a country for which a visa is not required with expiry 6 months beyond the date you leave the country
    • have a valid e-mail address
    • have a credit, debit or prepaid card (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, American Express) to pay Canadian $ 7 (non-refundable) expenses
    • go to the Canadian official website www.canada.ca
    • fill in the requested data
    • make a payment of 7 Canadian dollars with one of the accepted cards

    Most of the requests come approved within minutes. If additional documents are required within 72 hours, an email will be sent to you with the documents to be added to the request.

    The eTA application and the related payment must be made one person at a time, even for children.

    It's important print the receipt immediately upon receipt. It is not possible to request a copy or reprint it later.

    Il cost for the eTA application it is only 7 Canadian dollars (4,5 euros) and is valid for five years or until the expiry of the passport declared during the eTA application. The cost, in case of refusal of the application, is not refundable.

    To work or study in Canada you must have a work or study permit from the relevant Canadian authorities or a visa issued by the Embassy of Canada or the Consulate of Canada.
