1000 Ice Lantern Festival in Lapland, Vuollerim

Il 1000 Ice Lantern Festival takes place in Vuollerim, in Lapland, from 1 to 10 February, 2013. Thousands of hand-lit ice lanterns are lined up in the streets of the city by local villagers. A truly magical experience.

Making ice lanterns is a modern tradition that hooks on to ancient traditions when the people to wish good luck at the beginning of the year made these ice lanterns. The tradition comes from the women of the city of Vuollerim who decided to make these lanterns to decorate the annual winter market in Jokkmokk. This activity today has become a real tradition, so much so that only last year there were about 2000 ice lanterns.

The official lighting of the lanterns traditionally takes place on first Tuesday of February. The candles used burn for a long time, even for several days without ever going out. Many visitors go to Vuollerim during this time only to witness the transformation of the country, as it truly has something magical about it.
