Olavinlinna Castle and the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Finland

A Savonlinna, on Lake Saimaa, is the castle of Olavinlinna, perhaps the most famous of the Finland. We are about 300 kilometers from Helsinki. Construction began in 1475 by the will of a Danish knight, Erik Axelsson Tott. Due to its appearance and its position it is the scene of decidedly exciting photographs and Savonlinna is still today a hub for the boats that travel the length and breadth of the lakes region. In fact, in Finland there are over 180 thousand registered lakes and many of them are connected to each other.

Why tell you about Savonlinna? In addition to the fact that you cannot miss it if you plan to organize a trip to this wonderful Scandinavian country, here every summer the Savonlinna Opera Festival, among the most appreciated and known in the world also for the acoustics of its castle.

Having been lucky enough to live the experience, I can guarantee you that listening to the opera within the walls of a medieval castle, practically surrounded by the water of a lake during the Finnish summer is something difficult to forget. The festival takes place during throughout the month of July every year but it is necessary to book tickets many months in advance although there are over 2.200 seats. In fact, the costs are certainly not low cost, since the ticket for an opera can well exceed 100 euros up to figures that it is better not to write to you.

Of course, to fully enjoy the experience, I recommend that you get there by boat and there is certainly no shortage of those in Finland.

If you are not interested in the work, the cost to visit this huge castle is 8 € for adults, 4 € for children aged 7 to 17. Under seven it is free. During the Saint Olaf Day, on July 29th, the cost is 1 euro. Olaf is Olav's translation, of course.
