Erice, the city of 100 churches, Cathedral of the Assumption

Erice it is also called the city of 100 churches and one of the churches that is absolutely worth visiting in my opinion is the Duomo dell'Assunta.

The church was built during the first decades of Fourteenth century according to the project of the architect Antonio Musso. The church is Gothic in style and some restorations were made in the XNUMXth century. The plant is of type basilica with three naves, delimited by two long rows of tall limestone tuff pillars. In the main altar, in the center of the transept, is the Madonna of the Assumption, which then gives its name to the church, surrounded by bas-reliefs depicting the Saints Evangelists inside niches.

The external portal is clear Catalan inspiration, decorated with diamond ashlars, it is surmounted by a characteristic window that opens onto a long recess of the external wall. A mammelliform dome surmounts the building. A must see.
