In fact, I'll tell you about a really cheap solution to sleep in a hostel in Amsterdam, the sparkling Dutch city.
This hostel is young, colorful, decidedly alternative and it's called Train Lodge. It takes a little bit of spirit of adaptation and ability to share.
Train Lodge: a night train that has become a hostel
Amsterdam has many accommodation offers, but this idea of giving a new life to a night train (now there are very few) is absolutely irresistible: you got it right, it really is a train, the one that connected Rome with Zurich.
Its beautiful sleeping carriages are now transformed into an unusual, economical and practical accommodation facility. The hostel is "parked" on a platform at the Sloterdijk station.
If you arrive by plane a Schiphol and take the railway line that leads to the center, the first train station.
The reception car stands out well because it is all colored, while the other cars are blue.
The reception is open 24 hours a day and it also has a common area, where you can play board games, watch TV, talk with other guests or have breakfast.
The common area also extends outside, in the summer. In addition to the tables, the space to be outside is equipped with a barbeque.
The options for sleeping
As for sleeping, what you book is a sleeping place in a compartment.
The beds are 6, the options are those of a hostel: you stay together with others (strangers), or - paying more - you book a compartment for us and our travel companions.
However, the management provides for the possibility, for female travelers, to reserve an all-female compartment.
The Train Lodge offers sheets and pillows, towels are available for hire.
The beds are bunk beds and the cars are heated (or ventilated in summer). In each compartment there is a mirror and a small sink, there are two or three electrical sockets available for recharging, there is a wi-fi connection.
Space for luggage and personal belongings is limited but everything is close at hand. At the two ends of each car there are bathrooms, equipped with showers, very basic, as you can imagine.
In the reception car it is possible to have breakfast, which is paid separately and is very simple: the choice falls between coffee, tea and small snacks. They also serve beer and soft drinks.
Connection with Amsterdam
As for the connection with Amsterdam, being in a station, just take the metro and you can reach the center in a few minutes.
For night owls there is always the possibility of returning from the center with a bus that runs even late at night.
But, in true Dutch spirit, the Train Lodge gives the opportunity to rent bicycles to discover the city and its streets interrupted by the canals in complete autonomy and with the best vehicle.
Another advantage of sleeping "in the station" is the possibility of taking other trains to visit the picturesque Dutch cities: Utrecht, L 'Aja, Rotterdam, Harlem... and the others, all at distances of less than an hour of travel.
A really low cost hostel in Amsterdam
