Valley of the Kings in Luxor and the Tomb of Tutankhamun

Valley of the Kings in Luxor and the Tomb of Tutankhamun

The Valley of the Kings it is located near ancient Thebes, today Luxor, and its access is less than 3km from the west bank of the Nile. At the foot of the valley is the village of Deir el-Medina, born to house the workers who worked in the Valley of the Kings. Even today it is not known for sure who was the first pharaoh to be buried in the valley. To date they have been discovered 62 tombs, not all of pharaohs. The tombs are numbered in order of discovery from KV1 (King Valley First Tomb) to KV62 (Tutankhamen's Tomb).

The territory was chosen for its morphology, in fact it has one limestone and then easy processing. The Valley of the Kings has impressive rock walls and the mountain is pyramid-shaped. It branches into two valleys, the east valley and the west valley, and most of the funerary monuments are located in the east valley.

Each tomb is located underground and can be reached after a few meters descent. In the tombs it is absolutely not possible to take pictures and the change in temperature between outside and below is very remarkable. So remember to always carry with you water and a hat. In fact, it is not possible to visit the Valley of the Kings in the evening but only during the day and here when it is hot….it's really hot. Also consider that there are no green or refreshment points but only Egyptians who come by to sell you water.

    Tomb of Merenptah (KV 8)
Thirteenth son of Ramesses II, he became pharaoh because the other 12 brothers died before their father.

    Tutankhamen tomb (KV 62)

    Tomb of Ramesses VI (KV9)
The tomb was begun for Ramesses V, and the debris was thrown over the tomb of Tutankhamen. It then housed two pharaohs, but was sacked only twenty years after its closure.
