Tiberius Bridge in Rimini and the legend of the devil

Il Tiberius Bridge in Rimini, in reality it was not designed or conceived by Tiberius, who however gave it its name. Even though it was called "di Tiberio", the bridge was planned and started from his predecessor Augustus, the same to whom the Arch is entitled. Its construction began in 14 AD under the government of Augustus while the end of the works took place in 21 AD, under the government of Tiberius.

Built in Istrian stone like the Arco, it also incorporates the sober and at the same time harmonious style. The structure consists of 5 round arches. The size of these arches varies in an increasing way as you move towards the center, where we find the largest arch. From the bridge two consular roads left, the via Emilia which reached as far as Piacenza and the via Popilia-Annia which reached as far as Aquileia.

The legend that this bridge is atato created by the devil, is due to the presence of two notches resembling theimprint of goat feet, on the balustrade on the mountain side. More likely, however, it could have been hollows for fixing pulleys used to hoist material from boats that reached under the bridge.

The Tiberius Bridge is the only city bridge crossing the Marecchia river that the German armed forces during the Second World War they failed to demolish. Even today the bridge is busy and is used for the passage of cars and heavy vehicles.
