Sleeping in the Bauhaus, a b & b in the school in Dessau

The word Bauhaus, for those who have studied or are passionate about art, architecture and design is a fundamental point of reference: the school that has this name developed between the 20s and 30s of the twentieth century in Germany, first in Weimar, to move later in Dessau, a city at the time of an industrial vocation just over 100 km from Berlin. It is in this place that the building was built that embodies the rationalist and functionalist characteristics of the movement, of which it will also become the symbol: this will be the fulcrum from which all the innovative movements of architecture and design of the following decades.

This architectural complex designed by director Walter Gropius was left in a state of neglect for 40 years after the end of the Second World War and restored after the fall of the Berlin Wall. After the fall of the Berlin Wall it became a museum: from October 2013 it will be partially converted into bed & breakfast.

The intention is to rebuild students' lives within these environments: guests will spend the nights where, a little less than a century ago, some of the greatest architects and designers of the last century slept. To make everything even more coherent, the rooms will also be in line with it Bauhaus style: bright, simple and essential, in a word, functional. In many cases, the furnishings will be objects designed right within these walls by designers such as Marcel Breuer's chairs; some of the rooms were designed with photos from the time and inspired by the students who lived there: Alfred Arndt, Franz Ehrlich and Josef Albers. The intention is in any case that of evoke the atmosphere of the time, in order to give guests the experience of feeling like real bauhausler. The rooms are 21 for a size of 24 square meters.

The prices will really be low cost: a double room will have a cost from € 55 per night, € 35 instead for the single. A (single) room has been completely rebuilt with the original objects and furnishings, to sleep in this the price will be 45/50 €. To maintain the spirit of the school's “dormitory”, the bathrooms are shared. As this is a "protected" building as a historical monument, unfortunately it is not possible to guarantee accessibility for those with mobility problems.
