See the Northern Lights, DIY package

THEAurora Sky Station, which we had already talked about in another specific post, is one of the best places to see thenorthern Lights In Svexiz. Aurora Ski Stationad is located in Abisko, near the Norwegian border 200 km north of polar circle.

Today we explain to you how to get there and where to sleep in Sweden, but above all how to find the Northern Lights on your own, without the need for agencies or external help that would make you spend only money, often useless - but this in Norway. It is not always recommended to do it alone, especially when the outside temperatures are extreme, as in this case, but we are not advising you to go into the woods alone and sleep in a tent, which you would never be able to do by the way, but simply to organize yourself in the best possible way, at home and above all low cost.

How to reach us

To get to Abisko fly to Kiruna via Stockholm with the SAS or from this year also with the low cost company Norwegian and from there you can continue by bus or train or by renting a car for 100 km west.

Accomodation

If you want an impressive accommodation we recommend the Ice Hotel which is located in Jukkasjärvi, the first and largest ice hotel in the world, measuring 5.500 m2 and offering 65 rooms including art suites, ice rooms, snow rooms and northern light suites. The novelty is a delux suite built in collaboration with the car manufacturer Mini Cooper and Designworks USA, 49 m2 large with sauna and heated relaxation area. Another novelty is the roof balcony to watch the Northern Lights and a cinema.

The construction period of the IceHotel is between October and December and it takes about eight weeks to complete the construction and 1000 tons of ice are used. Getting to the Icehotel is not easy, it is located in Jukkasjärvi village on the Torne river 15 minutes from Kiruna, reachable in 1 hour and a half by plane with the SAS from Stockholm or from Copenhagen on Thursdays and Sundays, or, from this year, also with the low cost airline Norwegian from Stockholm.

How to find the Northern Lights

Finding the Northern Lights is no small feat, quite the contrary. From this year, however, there is one more tool, the VisitNorway application, therefore valid only for the Northern Lights of the Norway, that is called Norway lights. The application is free and allows you to increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Its interface is modern and simple, designed to provide nature lovers with advice on where, when and how to find the Northern Lights.

The app offers extended three-day forecasts, hourly forecasts for the day, tips on whether or not to anticipate Northern Lights activities in certain cities in Norway. Finally, he gives tips and recommends some little tricks on how to take photos of the Northern Lights
