Procuratie of Piazza San Marco in Venice, where to stroll




    Le Procuratie are imposing buildings that take their name from the fact that here the Procurators of San Marco. They are distinct in three wings and are found in St. Mark's Square and almost entirely delimit the part of the square in front of the Basilica of San Marco: the Procuratie Vecchie to the north, the Napoleonic Wing to the west and the Procuratie Nuove to the south.

    Le New Magistrates occupy the south side of Piazza San Marco. The Procuratie Nuove were built in neoclassical style on a project by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1582 in place of the Orseolo Hospital. The Procuratie Nuove were divided into 9 apartments, the same number as the Procurators of San Marco. With the fall of the Republic they became Napoleon's royal palace. From 1922 the Procuratie Nuove were designated as the seat of the Correr Museum which contains vast and precious collections of coins, paintings, furniture, sculptures and much more. Inside this museum you can experience the entire history of the Serenissima, from its origins to the last century, through an interesting path that will allow visitors to discover the uses and customs of the city, but also its art and architecture. From the windows of the Correr Museum you can see interesting views of Piazza San Marco. The entrance to this museum is located under the Napoleonic Wing, with the following opening hours: 10,00-19,00. Ticket cost 13 euros, reduced € 7,50 (tel. +39 041 2405211).



    Napoleonic wing e Procuratie Vecchie. The Napoleonic Wing was built at the behest of Bonaparte in 1810. He wanted to use it as a ballroom for his royal palace. To build it, the Church of S. Geminiano was demolished in 1807, built by Jacopo Sansovino at the bottom of Piazza San Marco around the middle of the 500th century in Renaissance style. A majestic staircase leads to the entrance to the Correr Museum. The Procuratie Vecchie are supported by 50 arches and were built by Marco Codussi around 1500 replacing the previous building in the Venetian-Byzantine style, but finished in the following years by Guglielmo Grigi and Sansovino. Under its arcades there are numerous shops and some cafes that have their tables also in Piazza S. Marco. On the upper floors there are various offices but also some houses.
