Moving to New York, curiosity about habits

Advice from an Italian who lives in New York, here's how to move, what you have to adapt to to live well, work and eat like New Yorkers in the Big Apple.

They often make me a lot questions about New York, since I live there. For example, they often ask me how you live here compared to the Italian one, how and what you eat and how, basically to do to feel good in New York. Life in New York is not easy, especially at the beginning, and there are some fundamental steps to overcome to be happy in the Big Apple, some of these for us Italians can be really hard!

Home-work: busy life

Adapting to the busy life is essential. The city is huge and especially very expensive and this leads to a lot of work, as much as possible to tell the truth, to be able to pay rent, bills and even indulge in some whim. As the city is so large, it will be almost impossible for you to work where you live, unless you are very, very lucky. Getting to work on time is a prerogative not to be fired, and considering that you are on the move mostly on the subway or by means of transport, you will have to consider the travel times, also calculating the possible delays of the subways, which are also sometimes here, not only in Italy! This in a nutshell means that from when you wake up to when you go to bed you have to run, run and run.

Adapt to travel

Running from place to place means know how to organize, knowing how to decide when it's time to leave, anticipating the means, predicting strikes. All of these things aren't always easy and New York is a huge city.

This means that, inevitably, you have to adapt to travel and do on the subway what a person would normally do at home. Me for example on the subway I often read, I put on makeup, I take a nap, I reply to emails and much more. Often I eat there also, because when I finish work at 21 pm and I know that I will not be home before 22 pm, the easiest thing to do is to buy food, eat on the subway and get home without having to do anything else.

Food, eat American

Food chapter! It must be approached with due precautions if you are planning to move to New York as it is not as easy as it sounds. Obviously we Italians cannot conceive many things and perhaps we will never conceive them, but we must always remember that no one in the world eats like us, due to habits and quality, wherever we go we will always eat differently, in New York it works like this.

When they first told me they were in New York people eat on the subway I didn't want to believe it. When I saw it with my own eyes, I was even more shocked. When I moved to New York, the first thing is disappeared from the furniture in fact, the kitchen table has never appeared. Why occupy space with a table and 4 or 6 chairs when there is a sofa, the marble of the kitchen, the desk that does not have a free hole even to pay for it, the carpet, etc. The table was bought by my parents when they came to see me because they refused to eat like me on the sofa. When my friend saw us at the table all together he looked at us with a puzzled air saying that the last time he sat at a table set, excluding restaurants, was 5 years ago.
In terms of cost, eating out, even if it seems surreal, costs less than eating at home, moreover all this makes you waste much less time, also because it allows you to avoid shopping, washing dishes and cooking.
