“Modigliani, Soutine and the cursed artists” exhibition at Palazzo Reale, Milan

“Modigliani, Soutine and the cursed artists” exhibition at Palazzo Reale, Milan

Il Royal Palace di Milan, located in a small recess of Piazza del Duomo, called Piazzetta Reale, right in front of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, starting from February 21 and until September 8, will host the exhibition "Modigliani, Soutine and the cursed artists".

An opportunity not to be missed considering that the works on display are part of the Netter collection and had not been on public display for over seventy years. Modigliani, Soutine, Utrillo, Valadon e Kisling are just some of the influential names that will accompany you on this journey back in time, to Paris in the early twentieth century, in the Montparnasse in which ours, Jews in a time when being a Jew was condemned to death, took refuge, lived, survived and worked.

Jonas Netter, also a Jew, was for them a real patron and, most likely, without his protection, many of those artists would not have had the opportunity to pay the rivers of wine and alcohol to which they were too lightly allowed. Netter immediately fell in love with the Langhi hills of Modigliani, took him under his wing and attempted to save him from himself. Modigliani, however, did not want to be saved, he wanted to be. Simply. It was he himself who later introduced his friend Soutine to Netter. This exhibition, dedicated to them, confirms the bond, both artistic and personal, and enriches it, embellishing it with the works of their other companions in adventure-misfortune who found their own happy oasis in Montparnasse.

Cursed artists, of course. And how could the most cursed of the cursed be missing? Maurice Utrillo. Epileptic, alcoholic, crazy. Born of Marie-Clèmentine Valadon, also protagonist of the exhibition, mother artist / prostitute and an uncertain father with the name perhaps of Rodin, perhaps of Renoir, perhaps of the sculptor Bartholomè, or perhaps of the Catalan student Miguel Utrillo y Molins who, eight years later the birth of the child, while the hypothetical paternity was still being discussed, stood up and proclaimed: "It would be a real honor for me to be able to sign the work of one of these great masters with my name!" And so, from that moment on, Maurice was Utrillo. The damned, the sick, the furious, the one who painted to find consolation for his daily ills, relief or hope.

As you may have understood, what I propose is not just an exhibition, it is one page of history and society. Of torments and fears. Of desire for revenge and destructive fragility.

They are "The colors of the soul", which Mick Davis brushed in his film released in Italy back in May 2005.
If you haven't already, watch the movie and then run to the exhibit. I assure you that you will not regret it!
