Mauritius, a trip to the rhumerie

Say Mauritius is to say also rhumIndeed, the phrase would be more correct if we said, to say true rhum is to say Mauritius. The history of rum, the island's local alcoholic drink, is indissolubly linked to Mauritius.

Sugar Adventures Museum

Before embarking on any rhumeria tour on the island, I recommend that you go and see the Sugar Adventures Museum which is located in Pamplemousses and so, for personal advice on the same day you can also see the Botanical Garden of Mauritius.

At the museum you can do one visit, guided or not, through the history of sugar and then enter the shop, where you can buy rum or taste the different types of rum made specifically on the plantation next to the museum. The sugar museum is multimedia, so as to interest even children, and allows you to understand the history of the island also through the history of sugar, the trade and the uses that have made this raw material one of the most exploited on the island.

Ma how rhum is created from sugar canes? Explaining broadly, I am not an expert in rum production, we can say that the first step is to cut the canes and grind them, the juice obtained is added to the lime milk which has the effect of aggregating the sugary substances that are used as fertilizers. The rest of the juice is immersed in tall cylinders where it is "boiled" and the remaining liquids are evaporated. The resulting juice is boiled again, this time it is much denser. In the last step the thick liquid is shaken and while the sugar crystals remain in the container, the syrup comes out. In this way you can create rum, dry or flavored, according to your tastes.

Rhumerie de Chamarel

Rhumerie de Chamarel it is one of the places that I recommend you to visit to taste good rum. In addition to visit, which I recommend to do guided, you can also have lunch here and prepared the typical local drink, the Ti-punch by yourself.

The shop offers the company's products, even if the flaw is that since it has only been open since 2008 you will not find rum who knows how old it is. However, it is worth a visit to the modern and colorful structure that will make you want to stay and taste all the rum it offers. If rum so dry does not drive you crazy, I suggest you taste it in the typical drink of Mauritius, alcoholic I mean, the Ti-punch.
