Lecce: city of stone and papier-mâché nativity scenes

Lecce is a Wonderful city and its inhabitants really seem to have come out of a book of other times, in which the value of the family, religious devotion, the sense of belonging to the community are still deeply felt, compared to the surrounding society made up, for the most part, of racing, exteriority and self-centeredness.

I still remember the first time I set foot in Salento: it was August and many citizens were busy, in their spare time, preparing the church for a procession. This same spirit of sharing is what characterizes also and, perhaps above all, the days preceding Christmas, where the famous inspiration and the traditional skill and skill of Lecce, the one that in the past built palaces, baroque churches and that even today you can smell it even only from the shop windows of the pastry shops where it seems to stand in front of works of art in almond paste, takes over.

So here is thehandicraft, tradition, religious faith, also felt by young people and not only by the elderly, become a source of inspiration and guiding thread in the creation of papier-mâché and stone nativity scenes known all over the world. In their free time, in fact, pensioners, workers, employees, students or carpenters work to model, create, paint everything that surrounds the Baby Jesus and that the on December 12st, when the Fair of S. Lucia, will be exhibited and admired by young and old.

Le ways of cribs there are thirteen and, thanks to the Inter-municipal Association "Città dei Presepi", citizens and tourists can take advantage of free buses and guides to reach the chosen destinations.
