Lapland: 3 excursions not to be missed

Three excursions not to be missed in Lapland, from those with reindeer to those with huskies, read the post and book the trips in Lapland do it yourself.

You remember when we talked about the possibility of one Low cost Lapland, in this post? If you haven't read it, do it now, because what follows here is meant to be a crowning achievement (but you can also read where to sleep, here). Lapland can be done at an affordable cost, we said, bypassing certain "organized bloodletting". But, I realize, going to these places in Winter is not immediate and it is not for everyone. It is difficult, first of all. The hardest thing? Organize do-it-yourself excursions.

What I would like to recommend here is what I have experienced: to rely on a local tour operator. This solution constitutes the ideal compromise between do-it-yourself and rely on those who know those places. And the savings are guaranteed! Local tour operators are, of course, extremely organized and, knowing the specificities of the territory and the extreme temperatures, they also know how to provide tourists with the most suitable equipment for each excursion.

This is a safari site that you can consult, for example, In our case, since it is Winter (January), there have been dates thermal wetsuits to wear over our ski suits and special boots: I guarantee you that this equipped you will not be afraid of anything! To organize the excursions, just go directly to the office and book them (we did it at the last minute and there were no problems), or write an email.

But, let's get to the point: which excursions do we consider unmissable?

  1. The excursion with huskies
  2. The reindeer excursion
  3. The search for the Northern Lights

THEexcursion with huskies involves arriving at a farm, where the trainer will give you instructions on how to guide the pack of dogs. We usually start in a group, with several wetsuits. A curiosity: did you know that you don't have to slow down, because it's dangerous? If the distance between the dogs becomes too short, they could fight each other. We happened to instinctively pull the reins to make them slow down and the pack leader turned around as if to check that everything was ok. If you need to brake, there will be one of the trainers (who runs with you) to give a vocal order.

THEreindeer excursion it is less lively than that with huskies: the pawing of hooves on the snow is decidedly different from that of dog paws! They are two very different experiences and both to try. In the middle of the path in the woods, where you will still be accompanied by the Sami breeder, there will be a stop in a typical Lappish tent, where a fire will await you on which you will roast sausages and where there will be a copper teapot full of boiling water to make the you. Then the trip will resume, in the silence of the woods. A curiosity: the sami who leads the sled will ask you if you want to drive, at some point; if you agree, at the end of the excursion you can obtain a reindeer driving license! Warning: it expires after 5 years ... This will force you to come back here to renew it (what a cancellation, right?)!

THEexcursion in search of the Northern Lights it is, of course, a lottery game, a Russian roulette: no one can guarantee you that the goal will be achieved (and you won't be able to ask for your money back, eh). However, it must be said that, reached or not, in the end you will still be satisfied: you will still have seen a starry sky worthy of National Geographic and made one of the most suggestive experiences of your life. You can make the excursion in search of the aurora in the woods at night, with a bonfire; or, you can do the one that also includes a stop in a Sami farm, with a visit to the farm and the inevitable restorative bonfire (sausage and ritual tea).

Do you know what I tell you? As I write about it I get one nostalgia for Lapland, that almost I'll be back soon! And then I have to renew my reindeer driver's license.
