Lake Hillier, Australia's pink lake

Lake Hillier is a lake ofAustralia Western instantly recognizable by its unusual colore rosa. But why the lake has this unusual color, you may have wondered. Lake Hillier is located on Middle Island, the largest in the Australian archipelago called Recherche and made up of at least 100 islands, in the vicinity of Cape Arid even if the reason for the pink color seems totally unknown at the moment. The fascinating lake does not fail to enchant tourists and travelers or simply travel curious who find themselves frequenting these places or simply seeing the “pink” photos.

It is a salt lake devoid of tributaries located in 600 meters from the ocean. Its vegetation is mainly composed of eucalyptus trees. The first information about this lake dates back to 1802. The pink color of the lake water is permanent and it would remain even when the water is poured into a container. The reason for the presence of such a coloring has not yet been clarified by science.

The only hypothesis made over the years is that the coloring is due to the presence of seaweed belonging to the Dunaliella salina species. These algae have a bright red color and are rich in carotenoids. The color of the lake could therefore be attributed to their presence, but at the moment it is a correlation that has not yet been confirmed.

Whatever the reason that colors this lake pink, we thank, because seeing such a lake fills the day with happiness.
