Hydra: an island of yesteryear in Greece

Hydra is an island of Greece located in the Argo-Saronic Gulf. Here is a post to get to know her better and to fall in love with her definitively.

I have been in Greece many times and I have also visited several islands, but never had I come face to face with an island like Hydra. I was struck by it as soon as I got off the catamaran that from Ermioni takes you directly to Hydra Town in about half an hour… It welcomes you with its amphitheater position that almost seems to want to welcome you with all its soul.

Hydra is an island of the Argo-Saronic Gulf, one of those islands particularly frequented by the Athenians because it also has a direct connection with the port of Piraeus, but full of tourists from all over the world who can no longer do without its tranquility but also its sweet teeming with life. It is a particular island where no vehicles of any kind can circulate: from cars to mopeds, but even bicycles!

Here you can breathe a (clean) air of other times e you move on foot, With taxi boat or with donkeys that welcome all the customers who have just arrived on the port. Yes, because Hydra is an ideal island for those who want to completely switch off but without losing the opportunity to have fun and live a worldly life… in short, it is a tangle of moods that make you love it unconditionally.

And these feelings I felt on my skin when, despite the late hour of my arrival, its liveliness and uniqueness immediately conquered me, so much so that I immediately got off on the street after a fleeting shower. Describing it is not easy, but I'm trying! First of all it is aesthetically enchanting talking, well maintained, full of cats that circulate undisturbed and pampered by tourists and by all those who have a bar or any commercial activity.

It is easy to see them on the pier waiting patiently for some fisherman to hand them a fish, in fact here in the morning the fishermen sell to tourists or restaurateurs catch of the day exhibiting in full view on their boats, there is really everything.

But the most particular thing is certainly that there is always a coming and going of people passing from one beach to another using only their legs, when possible, or small water taxis. The beaches are truly wonderful: the two small coves of Spilià and Hydronetta for example, where you can dive from the low rocks and comfortably climb up the ladder and then relax at the tables of the two splendid bars overlooking the cliffs… and don't miss a sunset on the island because it is truly spectacular !!!

The beach is beautiful Vlychos, easily reachable by taxi boat (6 euros ar) or with a nice walk along the coast (about 40 minutes), with beautiful palm trees and sun loungers a stone's throw from a sea of reddish pebbles and a blue and clear sea.

Beautiful even the most worldly Plakes with two rows of sunbeds and a beautiful restaurant overlooking the sea ... here the prices are higher but enjoying a cocktail here by the sea is really priceless.

Further away the beaches of Bisti, Agios Nikolaos, reachable only by taxi boat in 20 minutes, but truly splendid. The beaches on the east coast of the island are also not bad, some of which can be reached on foot, for example Mandraki.

The apartments and studios on the sea or the more typical ones are also very suggestive guest house in a more elevated position, often reached by donkeys that help guests to carry luggage. I have been to the Hotel Amaryllis, very nice, a few meters from the port and with a beautiful balcony overlooking the narrow streets of the island.
