    German eating in Berlin, Esswerk

Find a good one German restaurant in Berlin it is not, paradoxically, an easy undertaking. Not that German cuisine is one of my favorites, but living here I obviously also want to eat typical dishes at times. Until a few days ago, every single German restaurant I tried (and there are several) had left me disappointed: menus lacking imagination and dishes without honor or glory. I was almost resigned not to try again, when a couple of days ago, I let myself be convinced without too much enthusiasm to try "Esswerk".

From the outside it looks nothing special. Inside it is very small but very welcoming and well cared for. Management and the family warmth they are immediately perceived: mother and son at the stove and father at the tables. The menu is not the classic one with Currywurst or Kartoffelnsalat that I have always faced.

The choice is very wide, varied and particular. Moreover for each day of the week they offer a different special dish. That day, for example, it was the ribs' turn pork in sweet and sour sauce with baked potatoes in sour cream. A real treat besides the fact that the portion was really huge. I also tasted the dishes of my dinner companions: the classic schnitzel (finally prepared properly!) ei Maultaschen (a kind of stuffed ravioli typical of Bavaria). In all three cases the portions were substantial and the taste outstanding.

The restaurant also offers a large variety of homemade desserts and cakes. Unfortunately, even if the temptation was really strong, I didn't feel like trying them because my stomach was already at the limit. I can say, however, that like everything else, they really had a beautiful face.

The value for money is also excellent. As in almost all other restaurants, the price of a main course is around eight / nine euros, of a classic two / three euro drink and the dessert is around five. With just over ten euros each you will have a royal dinner.

The restaurant is located in the residential district of Schoeneberg, a few minutes walk from Nollendorfplatz Station (reachable by four different underground lines: U1, U2, U3 and U4) and more exactly on the Nollendorfstrasse number 21. I would say that it is a place that I absolutely recommend to those who stay near Zoologische Garten, given the proximity. I recommend it in any case to anyone who wants to try good and traditional German cuisine.
