The great event of Expo 2015 of Milan but many do not know the history of this event, which began in the mid-800th century, and which has undergone transformations over the years.

First of all, there is a difference between theand Universal Exhibitions e International Exhibitions, as they are classified by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the intergovernmental organization, which has been planning and managing these events since 1928.

Expo: origins and history of an event

The one of Milan it is a Universal Exposition, while others that we may have heard of or that we have visited were those of the second level which have a shorter duration and which are organized more frequently.

As for the Universal Expo, in 1988, when the last memorandum of understanding was signed, the new criteria: must take place every five years, must last six months and a theme must be chosen that will be declined by the participants who are responsible for creating their own pavilion within the area identified by the host country.

But when was the first Universal Exposition? It was that of 1851 in London, in Hyde Park, which was intended to showcase the progress of the industry. On that occasion the Crystal Palace was built which was then dismantled and relocated elsewhere but was later destroyed in a fire.

Among the first exhibitions, the most famous was certainly that of Paris of the 1889, when the Torre Eiffel with the intention that it remained a temporary structure and instead became one of the symbols of the French capital.

The exhibition pavilions were built in an area behind the Sforzesco Castle, the Sempione park, and in what was called New parade ground, a vast area where, in 1923, the Milan Fair was built and which today is the ultra-modern CityLife district with its futuristic buildings. The only building left of the Milanese event is that of the Civic Aquarium, a splendid Art Nouveau building.

A Rome instead they were unable to organize the Expo because it was scheduled in 1942, in the middle of the Second World War, but an entire district was also built that takes its name from this event: theEUR (Universal Exposition Rome).

Among the buildings left or made famous by the Universal Exposition are: theAtomium of Brussels made in 1958, the Montreal biosphere of 1967, a Seville the area called Isola de la Cartuja, redeveloped for theExpo dl 1992, with several buildings, the Isla Magica, a large amusement park and the Alamillo bridge over the Guadalquivir, the unmistakable work of the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

The last Expo was that of 2010 in Shanghai which is remembered as the most expensive but the one with the most visitors, as many as 73 million entrances in a large area in which pavilions were built to discuss and address the issue of urban planning and the use of our cities.
