Arriving in the city the first thing you notice is the Serravalle Castle, built by the Tuscan Malaspina family, who have been protecting the small town from its hill for nine hundred years. The castle can be reached by car but it is advisable to start from the slopes of the hill going up the narrow streets of the old part dating back to 1600. It is a tangle of alleys, more or less steep stairs dominated by tall pastel-colored houses and from which they open panoramas more and more interesting as you go up.
