Bern and the Christmas Markets

Christmas markets in Bern, Switzerland, with two Christmas markets, the first under the Prison Tower and the second in front of the cathedral, here's what to visit in Switzerland to experience an atmosphere of yesteryear.

Bern it is not really the first city that comes to mind when you think of the Christmas markets. That's why I suggest it to you, because off the usual tourist routes, outside the most famous centers for the most famous Christmas markets, you find it: Bern.

    Bern and the Christmas Markets

There are two Christmas markets in Bern: the first is located in Waisenhausplatz, at the entrance to the historic center, just below the Torre delle Prigioni. The second Christmas market instead is in front of the Cathedral, in Munsterplatz, dedicated to artists and artisans and a 10-minute walk from the first. Within a short distance of each other, you can visit them both, or go back and forth without worries because both are beautiful and unique in their own way.

A Waisenhausplatz the markets remain open from the end of November until the day before Christmas, then on Christmas Eve. TO Munsterplatz instead the stalls open a few days after Waisenhausplatz and also close the day before Christmas.

While walking in the historic center among the wooden houses of candle makers and wood carvers, I suggest you try the typical products. These include toblerone, chocolate, apple punch, käseschnitte (slice of bread with melted cheese on top, a treat), which only in Bern can they really do so well. It is worth even just tasting it for the smell that emanates from the food stalls in every street.

Then I also recommend that you get away from the markets to discover the corners of Bern: leave it behind Zytglogge, medieval clock tower with its animated figurines, and walk along the main street along the arcades (where there are restaurants, small shopping centers, boutiques, patisseries, distilleries) Leave behind the street that from Marktgasse becomes Kramgasse and finally Gerechtigkeitsgassem , and you will arrive at the Nydeggasse bridge over the Aare river that surrounds the peninsula of the historic center.

Cross the bridge and on your right you will see the Bear pit, symbol of the city, which in winter obviously hibernate and therefore not visible. Go up the hill for an overall photo of the historic center of the capital, you will see a truly beautiful city, different from many others, you will see the real Bern here and if you have the chance, come back up here even when the darkness begins to fall for a photography full of illuminations. This will certainly be a unique memory for you and your family.

Whether you are out of town or in the historic center, be careful to cover every inch of your body because it doesn't matter if it's snowing, sunny or raining: it will still be very cold, we are still in Switzerland, remember?
