Bergamo, a walk in the Upper Bergamo

What to do in Bergamo, a walk in Bergamo Alta, what to see how to climb and which route to take to see the best part of the city of Bergamo, all in the post.

The best part of Bergamo? Certainly its upper town; this medieval village it is the oldest part of Bergamo and is located on a hill. Accessible through the 4 gates located along the walls that surround its entire perimeter Bergamo Alta (6 km) is truly a gem.

It can be reached at piedi, in funicolare, in machine (all car parks, mainly located along the walls, are paid) or in ATB. Once you arrive you will be immediately fascinated by this place, from which you can also enjoy a beautiful view of lower Bergamo.

Assuming you reach the upper town with the funicular, here's what one could be walk type: as soon as you exit you will enter the main street of the upper town "Via Gombito", just after on the right there is the road that leads to the Rocca, a suggestive place from which you can enjoy an excellent view of the lower city and surroundings. Returning to the main street, continue until you meet the most famous place in Bergamo Alta, that is Old Town Square near which there are also most of the main buildings: the Palazzo della Ragione, “il Campanone”, the library, the Cathedral of Bergamo, the Colleoni Chapel, the Baptistery and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Continuing on Via Gombito then Via B. Colleoni, or through the various side streets (less crowded), you will reach Citadel Square, pass it and you will arrive at the Marianna, where the homonymous pastry shop / café is located, a historic place in Bergamo where it was in 1961 invented the stracciatella ice cream. From here, crossing Porta Sant 'Alessandro you can continue the walk towards the Castle of San Vigilio on foot or by funicular.

On foot you will enjoy the best view on the Upper Town and admire the hills of Bergamo. Returning to the Marianna, if just before the pastry shop you turn left you can take a walk along the walls (I would advise you to do both, it's worth it). Walking along the walls you will meet the most beautiful and famous gate of Bergamo Alta, Porta San Giacomo, the only one that can only be crossed on foot and not by car and from which a cobbled path starts that connects the upper city to the lower city and the only one that can also be admired from lower Bergamo. Further along the walls is Porta Sant 'Agostino.

On clear days along the walls you can see, beyond the Bergamo plains, Milan and its Madonnina. Apart from the main attractions, you will find that Bergamo Alta is fascinating wherever you are, from the most touristic places to the less crowded and quieter ones; you will be enchanted by the beauties that will accompany you at your every step. In addition to history and culture, you will also find places for recreation: shops, typical restaurants, pubs and breweries, located mainly along the main street. Whether you are looking for a refined evening, a regenerating walk, an artistic / cultural excursion or a gastronomic tour you will certainly not be disappointed by this Italian pearl.
